GAME NIGHT WILL BE HELD THIS WEDNESDAY on the eighth floor of Lambton at roughly 7:30-8 ish.

Come and play a wonderful slew of board games/card games each with it’s own set of rules and game pieces.

(DUE TO PREVIOUS CONVERSATIONS, MONOPOLY WILL NOT BE PART OF THIS)

All are encouraged to bring in games to play

Hello everyone:

After a two/three month procrastination, Math Society: the club’s web blogging thing is up and running.

I want to wish everyone reading this a happy new year and a happy arrival to a FRESH new semester.

Now let’s get down to business:

It has come to my attention that not enough has been done in the past while about getting this off the ground. As of right now, I’m not sure what this club can be. Rather than not doing anything for the upcoming semester, I have decided to mention a few things that’ll be in motion.

1. T-shirts(PHOTO MISSING):::::: will be on sale from now till forever for $15 a pop. This may seem like a sweet deal, and you’re right—– it is.

2. Book Swap::::: We all know that texts don’t come cheap. Join me in a frugally fun book exchange. The basic idea is for students here to contact and exchange with others texts that are needed for classes being taken in the semester.

3. Game/Movie nights:::::: Join me in my quest for complete laziness and play a game or watch a movie. School can be stressful. Why not take a break and roll some dice, lay some cards, or pop some popcorn. With the hopes of making this a weekly box social, game/movie night will be super awesome. Trust me. (DATES POSTED THROUGHOUT SEMESTER)

4. Pi Day:::::: The much anticipated Pi Day will be here before we can recite the first 5,702,400 digits of the darn thing so you night as well tag along. Free pie will be the headliner and all are welcome to contribute whether that means buying one or making one for the day of celebration of this greek letter. More discussion and meetings will take place in between now and then and any comments or anything are greatly encouraged.

This coming Monday, March 14th the Math Society and the Computer Science Society will be celebrating Pi Day.

From Wikipedia: “Pi Day is a holiday commemorating the mathematical constant π (pi).”

The festivities will be in rooms 3150 (Java Lab) and 3125 (MSLC) of Erie Hall at 1:59 pm. These will include free pi(e), a pi memorization contest, a pie eating competition, as well as songs about pi and other mathematical goodness.

The Math Society will be taking the opportunity to sell T-shirts at the pi-day festival.

Come on out next Monday and have slice of Pi!

Valentines Day is Monday

For those of you with significant others, this is a reminder that Valentines Day is around the corner. In some circles, it has been considered cool and hip to ignore it as it is just a shamelessly commercialized faux-holiday that enforces traditional expressions of love. If you find yourself feeling this way be satisfied in the knowledge that the rest of us are having way more fun than you.

Speaking of more fun, my friends over at Out On Campus will be selling candy treats in the CAW centre. Buy some! Give them to your sweetheart, or your best friend, of just eat them yourself and enjoy the self-love. On a more math-related note, they will also have a “guess how many candies are in this jar” competition. I feel it is our duty as math students to enter this contest and win that candy. So get ready to figure out the average volume of a candy-heart.

The OAME Conference is Looking for Volunteers

The OAME (Ontario Association for Mathematics Education) Annual Confer ence is being held in Windsor this year, May 12-14. I have been asked to recruit some volunteers to help run the event. There are many jobs that need to be done when running a conference like this one, from helping attendees check-in, to making sure all the presentation technology is working the way it is expected. If you are interested in helping send me an e-mail at robsonr@uwindsor.ca .

Hello Winter!

Winter is here, but that doesn’t mean that the Math Society is hibernating! Far from it! We are busy planning a bunch of cool things for math students this term. One that I would like to begin hyping right now is Pi Day, March 14. We, along with the Computer Science Society will be hosting the festivities which will include FREE PI(E)! There is also a plan for a games night, and we will be looking to get our first Ultimate Frisbee victory this semester.

That’s all the news I have for now, until later: here’s a video of a machine that can balance a pencil on its tip.

Study Party

As another semester draws to a close all the undergrads in University-ville are becoming increasingly stressed and agitated by the impending onslaught known as FINAL EXAMS. Yes, December finals, that pre-holiday tradition that sets so many students on edge. Just when you should be preparing (bracing?) for family gatherings and gift giving, you find yourself obliged to do a series of mental gymnastics to prove that you deserve the degree that you so long for.

There is good news however. We are putting on a Math Society the Club Study Night. This Thursday night starting at 7:00 in the MSLC (Erie 3125) all math majors are invited to come study together and eat cookies and other good things supplied by Math Society the Club. If you are having trouble in Linear Algebra, Intro to Analysis or any other math course, come and share in the knowledge of everyone. We will have experienced math students on hand willing to help you with your difficulties. We will have a focused atmosphere in which to study. But most of all we will have cookies!

Come for the cookies.

One more thing: If anyone would like to bring their own cookies (or other snacky foods) to share at this event, please do not hesitate to do so!
